Students Learn from Local Business Experts About Start-Up Companies

March 28, 2012

For a second year in a row, Mrs. Melissa Mattie, LTHS business teacher, provided a great experience for students in her Introduction to Business Class.  Business owners and executives representing businesses in our community were able to tell a little about each of the businesses with which they work and how they began.  Afterwards, they judged students work on the sample start-up business plans that they designed and showcased.  Students did a fantastic job, and Mrs. Mattie provided a wonderful experience to speak with real-world instances and application.  Special thanks to our visitors who contributed to this great opportunity!

Dr. Kirk Cantor Speaks with Science-Minded Students About Plastics

Dr. Kirk Cantor, Loyalsock resident and professor with the Pennsylvania College of Technology's Plastics and Polymers program, spoke with about 55 LTHS students last week about the plastics industry, careers in plastics and polymer science, and course offerings available through Loyalsock and PCT in which students can earn up to 5 college credits through the program.  Mr. Todd Conner, LTHS chemistry teacher, has been working with Dr. Cantor through various collaborative experiences so as to expose more traditionally-minded science students to this fantastic opportunity and blossoming career field.  As it stands Loyalsock has a higher than average number of students go on to post-secondary institutions and major in some form of science, ffollowing fairly traditional paths in their education by attaining such degrees as Biology.  Various reports and studies, including those reported each year by Penn State University, indicate that over half of all entering freshmen to four-year institutions end up withdrawing by the conclusion of their freshmen college year.  For Loyalsock students, we learn that these students often move home to Loyalsock, and many seek to continue their educations at the Pennsylvania College of Technology.  Thus, these statistics have encouraged more conversation with students about choosing their career paths and educational experiences wisely before setting forth with what may have once been a fairly traditional post-secondary experience.  In order to gain more exposure for students, Loyalsock will be offering a dual enrollment experience for students in which LTHS students may choose to take PPT 115 (Introduction to Plastics Industry) and PPT 118 (Polymer Processing) at Loyalsock and taught certified chemistry and technology education Loyalsock teachers.  These courses are considered college level courses, worthy of college credit and are weighted the highest level of courses that can be taken at Loyalsock.  We encourage students to consider such coursework as stepping stones to what may become a very successful career as they enter their post-secondary world.  Overall the presentation last week was a very positive one as indicated by the multiple students who remained after the presentation to discuss with Dr. Cantor more about the opportunity.  Special thanks to Mr. Conner and Dr. Cantor for assisting with this process and making it possible for this opportunity for our kids!

Kayla VanFleet - Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Student of the Year

March 26, 2012

Kayla VanFleet, senior, and daughter of Duane and Susan VanFleet, was Loyalsock's representative of the 2012 Williamsport-Lycoming Chamber of Commerce's Outstanding Student of the Year.  She was recognized at the annual awards reception and dinner at the Genetti on March 6.  Each year, the Chamber recognizes an outstanding student and educator from each Lycoming County school district.  Prior to the ceremony, students from each county school are interviewed by a panel from the Chamber, who in turn, then recognize one Lycoming County student among all.  While Kayla was not recognized as the grand recipient, she held her own among some stiff competition.  Kayla's family, including sister Alisan, was in attendance to support and recognize her.  You can read more about her experience that evening here.  Congrats to Kayla and her family on this very deserving recognition!

Involvement is the "Key" to Success at Loyalsock

Current statistics are that over 80% of our Loyalsock students are involved in one or more extra-curricular activities, including athletics, music, drama, art, clubs, and volunteerism, among many more.  Tons of evidence suggests that students who are involved in school tend to have better grades and are likely to be viewed as well-rounded as they apply for post-secondary opportunities.  Within all of our extra-curricular functions, many students take on leadership roles and responsibilities.  One such organization that is very active in the school, community and beyond is Key Club.  Students who participate in this club, under the direction of Miss Jennifer Beck, participate annually at the state level.  This past week, Loyalsock's Key Club brought home six awards and were recognized state-wide for their service contributions.  Specifically, Dan H. and Gina G. ended a very successful year of service in their state roles, as yet another Loyalsock student, junior Jess S., enters this upcoming year as the Lieutenant Governor for Pennsylvania.  Congrats to Miss Beck and all of our "Key Clubbers" on another fantastic year and having the chance to lead so many other students across the state!

All-District Instrumental Concert - Awesome Experience!

In early March, LTSD's annual instrumental concert was held at Williamsport's Community Arts Center.  Like the turnout for the choral concert in February, this concert was equally amazing in terms of attendance, the students' performances, and the finale in which all district students in grades 4-12 performed various excerpts from Disney's The Lion King.  It is tribute to our students and our music staff for putting on such a spectacular performance for families and the community!  All the more reason why our music staff continues to be recognized as one of the best small school music staffs nationally as recognized by NAMM.

Congressman Marino Nominates Loyalsock students to National Service Academies

Students at Loyalsock compete with some of the best and brightest from across the nation to gain admission into countless universities as well as our nation's service academies.  Senior Adam Fellon received a nomination to the Air Force Academy in Colorado, while senior Nathaniel Rohrer received his to the United States Military Academy at West Point in New York.  What is unique to Nate and Adam is that, to receive a nomination, the students had to complete a rigorous application process that started March, 2011. The process involved numerous essays, references, physical fitness tests and multiple committee interviews while maintaining stellar academic, leadership and community service records. Without this congressional nomination, applicants without political affiliation cannot be accepted into a military academy. It is estimated that 30,000 students apply to each academy of which there are four. Of this number, approximately only a thousand students are accepted with a small percentage coming straight out of high school without previous military affiliation. So, it is a great honor and distinction that nominations were given to two Loyalsock students. Our congratulations go out to Adam and Nate for their dedication and success - we wish them the best in the final application process!

All-District Choral Concert at CAC a Smash!

February 15, 2012

Although a relatively small school district, Loyalsock has purposefully chosen to include a strong focus on the arts and music.  Such a position is evident when observing and taking part in one of our district's all-district choral or instrumental concerts held annually.  Last year, and this year once again, the choral concert was held at Williamsport's Community Arts Center, a phenomenal venue to see any sort of performance.  Over 300 students, grades 4-12, participated, showcasing some extraordinary talent through the various choruses and select choirs at the high school level.  The outcome of this concert is a tribute and testament to our music faculty K-12 and their never-ending support of students' experiences in the arts.  Interestingly, the finale has recently incorporated the help of other district personnel in showcasing our youth's talent.  Congrats to all students who participated and special congrats to our music staff on yet another successful performance!  On another note, our All-District Instrumental Concert will take place on Tuesday, March 6, 7:00 p.m. also being held at the CAC.
